Direzione Scientifica: Research Officer

AIRC Foundation for Cancer Research, one of the largest charities in Italy, is actively seeking to fill two openings for Scientific Officers (SO) in its Peer Review Office. AIRC supports thousands of scientists at the cutting edge of oncological research in Institutes and Universities throughout Italy. The scientific and clinical research activities of these investigators are key to the AIRC mission to find a cure for cancer.

The AIRC Peer Review Office is responsible for ensuring that grant applications are fairly and expertly reviewed, so that funds donated to AIRC are used to support only the best research. The AIRC Peer Review Office also makes sure that scientific results are accurately and effectively communicated to the public. SOs are expected to use their scientific background, communication and interpersonal skills to:

  • Write guidelines and prepare procedures for applicants, reviewers and grantees, including documents for legal and ethical research regulations;
  • Contact and recruit international scientists to serve as reviewers for AIRC applications;
  • Organize and run peer-review meetings to assess grant applications;
  • Assist applicants and grantees in all steps of the application and funding processes;
  • Help develop tools and methods to assess the impact of research funded by AIRC;
  • Communicate scientific findings to the lay public.

Job requirements

The successful candidate will have an M.D. or Ph.D. or equivalent training; a national and international experience in the biomedical, preferably oncological sciences; be a European citizen with fluency in Italian and English; possess maturity, integrity, and outstanding communication and organizational skills with an aptitude for writing in Italian and English; experience in communicating science and its nuances to the general public will be considered a plus.
